Objective 2: Student-driven Best Management Practices
3) Solid Waste Reduction
Shredding for Bedding
Mrs. Gilbert's 6th-8th grade students (currently 15 students) use shredded paper from the school office in their vermicomposting bin to help reduce our paper waste. Additional shredded paper is donated to a local 4-Her who uses it in her laying hens' boxes and in her boxes of baby chicks and turkeys.
5th Grade "Waste Watchers" Project
On January 17, 2014, Mrs. Foley's 5th grade students (4 students) planned their own Green School project. After brainstorming several possible projects, they decided to conduct a "Waste Watchers" investigation. They collected baseline data regarding the weight of trash collected in each classroom, media center, and math area for five full school days, analyzed and graphed the data, brainstormed waste-reduction suggestions, and prepared a visual presentation for the school, which was given on March 15, 2014. At the conclusion of the presentation, the 5th graders challenged students to reduce their solid waste. Students are randomly collecting data for five additional school days, and the classroom with the least amount of trash per student will be rewarded with a pizza party. Unfortunately, numerous snow days and delays prevented the students from completing this project prior to the Green School Recertification deadline. The contest should be concluded and results analyzed and shared with the school during the first week of April 2014.
