Owl Box Monitoring
Students observe an owl in our schoolyard owl box in October 2010. Students had been monitoring the box, which had been uninhabited for several years prior to this discovery. All 1st-4th grade students learned about the owl's diet and examined owl pellets during a lesson at Hickory Environmental Education Center during the fall of 2011. They applied this knowledge to continue monitoring the schoolyard for evidence of an owl's presence. All 5th-8th grade students (19 students) participated in an owl pellet lesson and examination at a visit to HEEC on March 19, 2014.
